Early explorers such as Thomas Blakiston sought a Railway Route through the Rockies. Coal deposits in the region were mined for export and to power the locomotives.
The last mine closed in 1985(?). While some residents still commute to mines in BC the Pass is developing a recreation and tourism industry.
