Edmonton, Alberta
The capital of Alberta, Edmonton boasts of a rich history
as the "Gateway to the North", celebrated each year in its "Klondike Days"
(July 21-30, 1994)
celebration. Styling itself as "The City of Champions", Edmonton is home
to a number of
professional sports teams
with a distinguished history
of winning.
What to See
Visitor sites
include the Odysseum
(formerly the Space and Science Centre) home to laser shows and an IMAX theatre,
Fort Edmonton Park (a restored pioneer village and replica of the Hudson's Bay
Company fort, built in 1846), the
Muttart conservatory (four pyramid shaped
greenhouses), the
Provincial Museum of Alberta ,
the Alberta Railway Museum and
West Edmonton Mall.
This latter site is a $1.1 billion shopping and amusement complex with more
than 800 shops, 11 major department stores, 34 movie theatres and
110 eating places. Galaxyland is
the amusement park with rides such as a submarine ride
and the world's largest metal roller-coaster (all indoor). Also in
West Edmonton
Mall is the World Waterpark with waterslides, waterrides and a wavepool. An
NHL size ice-rink is also part of the mall, as is an indoor lake with a
submarine ride and dolphin show.
Edmonton
is home to Klondike Days, Heritage Days, the Folk Music Festival,
the Fringe Arts festival, and Jazz City. Edmonton has a thriving
Arts Scene for visitors
to enjoy.
Of course, no trip to Edmonton would be complete without seeing the
Alberta Goverment buildings with their beautifully landscaped
parks.
