As I've written before, a big plus of this kind of travel is your "hotel room" has a new view every morning when you are touring the Mediterranean and every day is a new stop. This morning, it was this classic first view of Lisbon. The bridge looks familiar because it was designed and built by the same firm that did the Golden Gate for San Franciso. The statue at left, I have no doubt, is the Redeemer himself, though from this distance, it could as easily be Buzz Lightyear in flight mode.
- cabo_roca_field.jpg
Not much to show about Lisbon; a cloudy day and a whirlwind "Jeep Safari" tour of the countryside near it produced few good pictures. Our first stop was this ultimate (literally) coastal spot: Cabo de Roca.
- cabo_roca_monument.jpg
As the monument explains, Cabo de Roca is the Last Stop, the westernmost point of Europe. That way, the next land is America.
- restaurant_end_in.jpg
Not much to see but sea, though the landscape is wild and harsh, like Scotland. We were glad to take a cappuchino in the charming little bar/cafe there. I noted to Connie that since Europe was the Whole Universe reachable for its inhabitants until Portugal and a few other countries began the Age of Discovery, this place really is, in a way, the Restaurant At The End Of The Universe.

Another stop was at a monument to some battle, that, with all all due respect to those who felt it worth dying for, utterly escapes me now. However, the lowering sky did provide this dramatic shot of a nearby convent.

They also took us deep into the natural preserve forest for lunch - a forest so lush I wondered if Gandalf and Frodo would be showing up for tea.
- town_below.jpg
The last stop was this picturesque little town - which knows damn well how picturesque it is, and quite efficiently sold us a number of souveniers, including an almond liqueur that I can only hope will survive the trip home.
- under_bridge4.jpg
And that was about it. We had too little time to see more of Lisbon after the "Safari" tour got back, so we steamed out and under the bridge, giving me this shot almost identical to one I took of the Golden Gate last May.

After which, I went down from the top deck to join the afterdecks Farewell Party with the Caribbean band and wave goodbye to Lisbon.
