
Originating in Belgium, the breed arrived in Britain in the eleventh century. They were originally bred to hunt larger game. As only 'blue blood' aristocrats were permitted to own them, they were soon called bloodhounds.
These powerful scent hounds are known for their excellent sense of smell, their loose facial skin and pendulous ears. They also will drool.
This is a large active breed that needs daily exercise and a big fenced yard. Affectionate, and make good family pets.
Despite their gentle natures, and slower learning curve, bloodhounds are widely used as police tracking dogs. Search and rescue units also use them to find lost people. May become aggressive swhile tracking.
Colors: Black and tan, Dark red and or with tan. Also tawny colored.
Coat: Their short smooth coat requires little grooming and they are very clean.
Shoulder Height: up to 27 inches (67.5 cm)
Weight: up to 110 pounds (50 kg)
Females are smaller.
Hip dysplasia can be an issue. Their long ears must be kept clean to prevent ear infections.
Life Span: Can reach 12 years
