The Cooper Basin is an intracratonic/back-arc basin located in east central Australia. The Permian coal measure sequence has sourced over 5 TCF of recoverable gas and 300 million barrels of recoverable liquids found to date in all sand-bearing units within the Cooper Basin. Since the first petroleum discovery in 1963, over 100,000 km of 2-D seismic have been recorded, most large pools are now covered with 3D's and over 1100 wells have resulted in the discovery of 119 gas and 55 oil fields. Sales gas and liquids is moved to Adelaide and Sydney. The present and future brings challenges to both the major producing group and new explorers seeking recently released licenses that had been held since 1954. The challenge is the reservoir - or more correctly, to find, delineate, characterize, and exploit it economically. The Permian succession comprises many cycles of fluvial sandstones, fluvio-deltaic coal measures and lacustrine shales. Existing fields have been discovered by drilling four-way dip closure and three-way dip closure with fault control - formed in an almost continuous mild transpressive regime with one major pulse. Most fields produce from a half dozen to three dozen stacked, low net to gross, heterogeneous, diagenetically altered sandstones, each now at varying stages of development.
The depositional environment, structural development and hydrocarbon habitat of the five main gas-bearing formations will be reviewed.
Some of the 3D seismic methodologies and challenges in the coal measures (problems with mapping chronostratigraphic surfaces, multiple regression and kriging with external drift of multivariate seismic attributes for reservoir characterization, seismic stratigraphy/sequence analysis, inversion and AVO) will be detailed. The attempt to build one integrated earth model (via deterministic, geostatistical, and/or stochastic processes) for production optimization and later exploration strategies will be outlined.
Some of the details - access to land, full availability of all data in digital form, geological and economic risks - about the new exploration opportunities will be pointed out.
