GeoScience: K-12 Resources
This "page" is an
ongoing project to see what relevant K-12 GeoScience resources are available
"out there". This page (since it sits in
Calgary)
has a definite
petroleum or 'soft rock' bias. Also, since we're "in" Alberta, one of the
initial focuses will start from Alberta Education's curriculum. This
prescribes GeoScience topics in Science classes in Grade 3/7/8/11/12.
Another aim of this page is to identify Calgary, Albertan, Canadian and
International field
trips and GeoScience sites of interest. I've also
included general Earth Science Meta-links. Also the hope is that classroom projects, activities,
and other GeoScience information produced by students will be pointed to
or exhibited here. The overall point is to foster and facilitate dialogue
among the 'greater' GeoScience community.

All suggestions, materials,etc. to

teachers and other GeoScience Web authors is especially desired, in order to make this and other pages more useful
to young GeoScientists.
"The world we live in presents an endless variety of fascinating problems
which excite our wonder and curiosity ... They indicate that - in general
terms - scientific investigation is concerned with the manifestations
and transformations of matter and energy in space and time. Put more
briefly and philosophically, science is concerned with relationships
between events." (from "Principles of Physical Geology", Arthur Holmes)

Internet Resources is the best starting point if you're looking for an
organization or petroleum industry related resource.
A good starting point for someone who would like to obtain a
geophysical/geological 'flavour' is the archive of
The Earth

CGEN is an umbrella group concerned with all levels of geoscience
education in Canada. It encourages activities designed to increase
public awareness of geoscience. The Network acts as a forum to stimulate
and coordinate. EdGEO supports
local workshops on earth science for Canadian teachers.
Since programs related
to K-12 education in schools
are best delivered on a local scale, CGEN's Web Site - Intro,
Names&Addresses, Reports, and Earth Science
Resource Catalogue - is well worth visiting. They've also just
published the very useful "PAST: A Geoscientists Guide to
Public Awareness of Science and Technology".

The GeoSciences in the Alberta Curriculum
(These
topics are
the prescribed Alberta K-12 GeoScience curriculum.)
Grade 3: Rocks and Minerals. "Minerals are the building blocks of
rocks. Minerals are solid, naturally occurring inorganic substances with
definite chemical compositions and whose atoms are systematically arranged.
This orderly arrangement of atoms is repeated three-dimensionally... Rocks
are aggregates of minerals. Some rocks are composed of one mineral...others
are combinations of minerals... The rocks of the earth's crust and upper
mantle...participate in a grand recycling system known as the rock cycle...
This cycle involves the creation, modification, and eventual destruction of
three major classes of rocks...(from "Geology of the Calgary Area",
L.Jackson & M. Wilson, CSPG,1987)

Grade 7: Evidence of Erosion. "The circulations of matter that
are continually going on in the zones of air and water, and even of life,
constitute a very complicated mechanism which is maintained,
essentially, by the heat from the sun. ...These circulations are responsible
for an important group of geological processes, for the agents involved -
wind (moving air), rain and rivers (moving water) and glaciers (moving
ice) - act on the land by breaking up the rocks and so producing
rock-waste which is gradually carried away." ("Principles of Physical
Geology", Arthur Holmes)
In Calgary, petroleum geologists work exclusively with sedimentary rocks.
These rocks are,of course, derived from existing rocks by processes of
weathering and erosion, and form by accumulation and consolidation of
the transported material. Thus geologists and geophysicists must intimately
understand these processes in order to explore for and exploit the oil
and gas that is sometimes found in porous rocks.

features and rocks at the Earth's surface and deduction of the processes and
history of their formation. The direct observation of this accessible
part of the Earth lead to the conclusion that the present shapes and
positions of the continents, distribution of features such as mountain
ranges, as well as distribution of various rock types are second-order
results of major processes occurring within the mantle... the crust of the
Earth and the upper mantle ...appears to dominate its behavior" (from "The

Grade 11: (Science 20) The Changing Earth. The theory of Plate
Tectonics came about because our 'measurements of matter and energy
(actually seismic velocity, magnetic and gravity fields, paleomagnetism,
age determinations, and chemical compositions) in time and space' on and
within our Earth, caused a Revolution in the GeoSciences (in the late'60's).
How did this happen? Will another theory arise from observations that do
not fit into the accepted view. A unified view of Earth processes and an
understanding of the process of the development of a scientific theory
could come out of this topic.

- With
Earth Viewer You can view either a map of the Earth showing the
day and night regions at this moment, or view the Earth from the Sun, the
Moon, the night side of the Earth, above any location on the planet specified
by latitude, longitude and altitude, or from a satellite in Earth orbit.
Images can be generated based on a topographical map of the Earth,
up-to-date weather satellite imagery, or a composite image of cloud cover superimposed on a map of the Earth.
