I have been with the Calgary UNIX Users' Group for many years, and have served on the Board of Directors since 1998.
My background is primarily in computer science. I have an M.Sc. degree in Computer Science from the University of Calgary. Prior to this, I obtained a B.Sc. (First Class Honours) degree in Pure Mathematics, also from the U of C. Not surprisingly, I enjoy the mathematical aspects of computing (or is it the computing aspects of mathematics?), including such things as Conway's game of Life, and the Mandelbrot set. Starting around the time of Junior High school, I became a big fan of the Mathematical Games column of Scientific American, and later of its successors (Metamagical Themas, and Computer Recreations).
Professionally, I have been involved mainly in SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition), EAI (Enterprise Application Integration), seismic data processing, and software integrity. This has given me an opportunity to work with many levels of computing, from a proprietary real-time kernel, to low- and high-level graphics systems, to real-time and relational databases, to supply chain integration, web technologies, and HPC (High Performance Computing) -- all at the technical level, as well as architectural design and mentoring of others.
I have worked with many varieties of UNIX, and run Linux at home.
My kids are also into computing, including both gaming and software development. There are a number of other things which amuse my kids, too.
